With 9.7 million passengers (2012) and connections to approximately 100 destinations, Stuttgart is Germany’s sixth-largest airport and an important factor in the region’s economy as well as an important employer to the airport’s 9,500 employees. Over 400 take-offs and landings happen per day. Approximately 21,000 tons of air cargo and nearly 11,000 tons of airmail leave Stuttgart per year (data as of 17 October 2013).
One of the biggest challenges related to this project was the need to combine conveyor technology and structural steelwork, as well as the fact that the entire platform on the intermediate floor of the baggage distribution system with a total area of 1,500 square meters and a total weight of 100 tons had to be suspended, in its entirety, from the ceiling.
“As far as design, construction, and implementation were concerned, KLATT showed an incredible amount of professional instinct. The implementation of the steel-based conveyor system was considered an extremely difficult project. This is why we were all the more impressed with the flawless execution of the project by KLATT. Communication was great and direct. Every single decision necessary in the course of the project was made in a timely manner. We would like to express our thanks to KLATT as well as to all of their team member for a job extremely well done.” (Jürgen Keller, project and maintenance manager, Stuttgart Airport)
After approximately one year of construction, the revamping of the baggage conveyor system at Stuttgart airport terminals 1 and 2 was completed. The system was put into operation as scheduled, and completed to everyone’s satisfaction.
