With 9.7 million passengers (2012) and connections to approximately 100 destinations, Stuttgart is Germany’s sixth-largest airport and an important factor in the region’s economy as well as an important employer to the airport’s 9,500 employees. Over 400 take-offs and landings happen per day.  Approximately 21,000 tons of air cargo and nearly 11,000 tons of airmail leave Stuttgart per year (data as of 17 October 2013). 

Project Requirements

One of the biggest challenges related to this project was the need to combine conveyor technology and structural steelwork, as well as the fact that the entire platform on the intermediate floor of the baggage distribution system with a total area of 1,500 square meters and a total weight of 100 tons had to be suspended, in its entirety, from the ceiling.

After approximately one year of construction, the revamping of the baggage conveyor system at Stuttgart airport terminals 1 and 2 was completed. The system was put into operation as scheduled, and completed to everyone’s satisfaction.

  • Rebuilding of the baggage distribution system in terminals 1 and 2
  • A belt conveyor system with a length of approx. 700 running meters was adjusted to the needs of the new building.
  • Implementation of different ejection elements, such as vertical distributors, baggage deflectors and baggage lifters
  • Steel construction, approx. 100 tons
  • Platform (1,500 square meters, suspended from the ceiling)

Conveyor engineering control (SPS); material flow accounting (SAP), warehouse management (SAP). System control is performed via stored program controls with central I/O and decentralized I/O modules.
